Police Use of Taser and Stun Guns

Police defense is a complicated issue. It is not like self defense. The danger levels are much, much higher. Unless you actually worked in law enforcement, you could  .38 special ammo never truly understand how dangerous it would be to work as a police officer. Police officers carry guns for a reason: their job is incredibly dangerous. Their life is often threatened and they find themselves in very difficult predicaments. However, there will be those situations where the situation becomes dangerous but steps are taken to avoid using deadly force. This is where stun guns (aka taser guns) come into play. The employment of such devices in police defense has saved many lives.

Some may wonder how stun guns can be spoken about in a positive manner. The reason is that despite the news reports of serious problems that have resulted from the use of taser guns, there have been many instances where a very dangerous assailant has been brought down to his knees unable to harm anyone. And here is another aspect that some people may not be aware of: there will be those instances where the lives of aggressors have been saved because they were incapacitated by the taser guns used on them.

Again, the issue of police self defense is more complicated that most people realize. There are varying degrees of threats they face and there is an appropriate level of response that is required. In some instances, there will be gray areas. For example, if someone is reaching into their pockets, there will be serious fear that the individual is reaching for a weapon. At this point, the police may wish to use their stun guns to take the person out… safely. In prior decades, the police officers may have had to use their firearms on the person. In some cases, the person may have been reaching for a harmless item in the flurry of confusion. With stun guns, the potential for a fatality can be completely avoided. Such instances are often overlooked by the negative new reports but they do occur. Some uses of stun guns save lives. This is a fact.
